The following information provides the names of residents heading various volunteer High Desert Committees. Residents are encouraged to volunteer and participate by contacting the names below. Please note that some committees are in need of new chairpersons. For further information on open positions, see footnote below. Neighborhood Watch/Crime Prevention: Nancy Winger:270-6039 nancywinger@gmail.com This committee helps High Desert neighborhoods to form their own Neighborhood Watch Committees. Members meet periodically to discuss crime prevention in High Desert and consider new ways to control crime, promote safety and coordinate efforts with High Desert Patrol and the Albuquerque Police Department. Welcome Committee: JoAnne Peinado: 828-0813 joannepeinado@msn.com The High Desert Welcome Committee works to develop and implement a process to welcome all new High Desert residents to our community. The group puts together "Welcome" bags to distribute to new residents and periodically coordinates a morning get-together at the home of a High Desert resident. Community and Volunteer Events Committee: Chairperson Needed* The Events Committee works to foster a sense of community at High Desert. It plans, organized and supports activities around the community. The annual High Desert Summer Picnic is usually held in June at the High Desert Park. "Run For The Hills" Race: Tom Murdock: 822-9410 murdock@swcp.com The Run For The Hills Race Committee works all year long to stage the annual Run For The Hills Race in September at High Desert. This unique race follows High Desert streets and Open Space trails and attracts more than 900 runners from throughout the state and region. Committee members meet monthly to plan the event. Adopt-a-Highway: Ray Berg: 294-4112 rsberg01@comcast.net High Desert volunteers meets at least twice a year to remove trash along a stretch of Tramway right outside the High Desert entrance. Afterward, the group usually eats lunch together and plans the next clean-up. Trail Cleanup: Ray Berg: 294-4112 rsberg01@comcast.net A group of High Desert residents regularly meets for a morning of trail clean-up followed by a casual lunch. The group focuses on the Foothills Trail from Embudito Trailhead to Simms Park Road. For more information, click here. Opera Trips: Ellen Levy: 856-0697 ellenloislevy@aol.com The committee, under the leadership of Ellen Levy, plans opera trips during the summer to the Santa Fe Opera. The trips include a bus or van that leaves from High Desert Park and returns following the opera. Bicycle Club: Dean Bressler: 298-1392 dean.bressler@hdrinc.com The High Desert Bicycle Club is a group of High Desert residents that rides together on local trails and streets. The group also volunteers to patrol the trails during the annual Run For The Hills Race event. Adopt-A-Park: Ray Berg: 294-4112 rsberg01@comcast.net This group, under the leadership of Ray Berg, has adopted High Desert Park and is committed to cleaning and maintaining the park several times a year. Landscape Workshop: Chairperson Needed* This committee plans and runs xeriscape workshops for High Desert residents. Landscape Advisory: Chairperson Needed* This group meets periodically with the goal of monitoring the High Desert landscape and making recommendations as needed.
